This post is about our kitten adoption tips, mistakes, and what I'd do differently.

Our Life Before Adopting a Kitten
Our kitten adoption journey began with our love for animals. We both shared an interest in taking care of our pets when we were children.
We grew up with cats playing in the grass, dogs following our every move, sheep laying under shade of the trees, ducks quacking in our kid-size pools, hedgehogs curled up in our sweaters, and the lucky fish we brought home from the night at the fair.
We were the luckiest kids in the world, we got to experience a different type of love. One that seemed to always be full.
Before our kitten adoption, we were dog parents, tortoise parents and two-legged hooman parents to a toddler.
Why We Adopted a Kitten
I've wanted to adopt a kitten since I left my grandmother's home at age 5 but due to my sibling's being allergic, I wasn't able too. When I met my husband, he preferred dogs because of a bad childhood experience with owning a cat.
I asked every few years to reconsider but with a baby, dog and tortoise it always seemed to be out of season too. Then one plant shopping day, the owner of a nursery offered a free kitten. My husband called me from the car and I ran inside with my son to find a Calico kitten.
It was by chance, timing and my husband's ability to seemingly surprise me when least expected. She matched my dog's colors and their energy was perfect. Our first week we didn't regret the decision.

Tips on Preparing for a Kitten's Arrival
Kitten Proofing In an effort to keep our home safe for our toddler & dog, we have proofed the house. We've added a few things to this list for a kitten due to size and activities.
1. Baby Gate Add to stairs and areas unsafe for kitten exploration.
2. Electrical Cords Secure or add a cable management, if needed.
3. Garbage Can with Lid Preferably one that locks. Bones & strings can be extremely hazardous for your growing kitten to get into.
4. Choking Hazards Put away all small objects to prevent choking.
5. Medication Store all medication in cabinet or drawer.
6. Cleaning Supplies Keep all cleaning supplies and detergent stored. Switch to a non-toxic multi-purpose cleaner for peace of mind.
7. Toilet Lids Keep toilet lids closed and if needed, add a baby-proof lock.
8. Dryer & Washer Machine Always check be for use. Kittens love warm places.
9. Toxic Plants Rehome toxic house plants or store them out of reach. You pet can become ill or die from from poisonous plants.
10. Food Do not leave food out for your kitten to find like chocolate or garlic.
Tips on First Impressions: Dog Meets Cat
How We Introduced Them Safely When first introducing your dog and cat, take it slow. Rushing the introduction can lead to a negative interaction. To provide a positive interaction, use a gradual approach.
Our dog reacted with happiness but our kitten was shy. Since the kitten adoption was a surprise, we watched carefully with their body language. We followed this next simple step for their first initial greeting.
Initial Separation & Scent Swapping Hold your kitten at a near distant, enough for your dog and kitten to see each other. Then allow them to exchange a good scent swapping on their own.
Tip: Use treats to reward calm behavior to reinforce positive interactions or redirect attention if needed.

Mistakes & Lessons Learned
Balancing Between Pets I would love to say my dog was fully happy with the transition. My husband and I gave our attention to them equally but I wouldn't be lying if I said my toddler LOVED this new tiny pet.
When adding a kitten to a dog household, itās important to make sure neither pet feels neglected or overwhelmed. Hereās how we balanced attention:
- Set dedicated one-on-one time: Spend individual play or cuddle sessions with each pet daily, so they both feel valued.
- Rotate your focus: Alternate who gets your attention first each day to avoid jealousy.
- Use positive reinforcement: Reward calm, gentle behavior from both pets when theyāre together.
- Keep routines consistent: Maintaining your dogās usual walk and feeding schedule helps them feel secure during the transition.
Rushing to Gather Supplies Last Minute When our kitten arrived sooner than expected, I scrambled to buy everything at once. This led to some unnecessary purchases and missing a few essentials.
Lesson Learned:
Even in a surprise adoption, taking a quick moment to prioritize the absolute must-havesālike a litter box, food, and a safe spaceācan save stress and clutter. Next time, Iād keep a basic ākitten kitā ready for emergencies.
What I'd Do Differently
If I could do it again, Iād invest more in smart, quality products rather than just budget-friendly options. Choosing durable and thoughtfully designed supplies made life so much easier, from easier clean-up to better comfort for both pets. Itās worth spending a bit more upfront to save time, stress, and replacements later.
Iād also:
- Prepare a cozy kitten-only space in advance.
- Schedule extra playtime to manage kitten energy.
- Practice patience, knowing bonding takes time.
