New Kitten Essentials
When we got our kitten it was a total surprise. Bringing home a new kitten is equal parts heart-melting joy and “wait… what do I need again?” panic. From the first cuddle to the first zoomie at 3 a.m., having the right essentials on hand makes all the difference for both you and your new furry family member.
In this guide, I’m sharing my must-have kitten essentials—the tried-and-true items that make life easier, cozier, and a whole lot more fun for you and your new sidekick.
This post is all about must-have kitten essentials every pet parent should have.
Feeding Essentials
Your little fluffball is growing fast and needs the right nutrition to stay healthy. From kitten-specific food to the perfect bowls (that won’t tip over during midnight zoomies), having the right feeding setup is key.
Shallow Food Bowls Ceramic or stainless steel to prevent whisker fatigue and bacteria buildup.
Fresh Water Fountain Encourages kittens to drink more and keeps water cleaner longer.
Silicon
Measuring Scoop or Cup Helps with accurate portion control for healthy growth.
Kitten-Specific Dry Food Formulated for growth and development (look for high-protein, vet-approved brands).
Kitten-Specific Wet Food Adds moisture to their diet and keeps them interested at mealtime.
Optional, but Makes Life Easier for Me
Airtight Food Storage Container Keeps dry food fresh and safe from pests while maintaining flavor.
Silicone Feeding Mat Catches spills, prevents bowls from sliding, and makes cleanup quick.

Grooming & Hygiene
Even the tiniest kittens need a little upkeep. A soft brush, kitten-safe shampoo, and the right litter box setup can make grooming a bonding experience rather than a battle.
Small Litter Box Easy for kittens to get in and out of.
Litter Scoop For quick, daily clean-ups.
Unscented, Clumping Litter Gentle on sensitive noses and safe for little paws.
Soft Bristle Brush or Comb Gentle on delicate kitten fur and helps prevent matting.
Kitten-Safe Nail Clippers Keeps claws from getting too sharp (and your furniture safer).
Optional, but I Always Keep This on Hand
Kitten-Safe Shampoo Only for occasional use or accidents—most cats self-clean.
